691 students graduated from the Poltava University of Economics and Trade (PUET), the University of the Third Age in 2021; this is a project created to educate people over 55 years old. This was reported by the press service of COOP Ukraine, where PUET is included as a part of the educational system.

According to COOP Ukraine, 691 students graduated from the University of the Third Age in 2021, 552 of those attended blended learning course. During the 2020-2021 academic year, 24 groups of students assisted by 45 lecturers and designated officials of the universities of the city mastered such courses as “Healthy lifestyle”, “English and German languages”, “Psychology”, “Information and communication technologies”, “Local history studios of Poltava region”, “I want to live in a quality world”, “Choreography”, “Design therapy”, “Physical activity for people 55+”, “Master classes”, “Real lady”, “Creative laboratory“Retro grandmother”,“Social adaptive course”.

“Such projects are the things of the future, as the experience and abilities of people aged 55+ are more and more appreciated in the world. The more perfect the society is, the more understanding it has that a high quality education should be available to a person at every stage of life, – Illia Gorokhovskyi, the Chairman of the Board of COOP Ukraine said.

This academic year, both the educational process and the graduation ceremony were significantly affected by quarantine restrictions. In particular, the educational process was mainly distantly arranged, and the graduation ceremony took place at four locations instead of one, so that all the necessary quarantine standards and security measures could be met.

“We have been implementing the “University of the Third Age” project for the fourth year in a row. This time we faced a new challenge: during the quarantine, people in advanced years studied distantly. The lecturers developed courses for this format and placed those on MOODLE platform, so that the students mastered the courses online,” – Svitlana Nestulya, the founder of the University of the Third Age, commented on the educational process. – The blended form of education is not so easy for the senior generation; our lecturers individually transferred each student to online literally in manual mode, and taught them how to use modern technologies. But the trainees coped with it and demonstrated the skills of using information and communication technologies for the possibilities of self-development, self-improvement, and communication.”

The project is being implemented by the PUET team together with the lecturers of the Poltava V. G. Korolenko National Pedagogical University, Poltava State Medical University and thanks to the civic engagement of fascinated Poltava residents who, with the help of the “participation budget”, have been supporting the project for the third year in a row.

The social project “University of the Third Age” has been implemented in PUET, which is part of the educational system of the Ukrkoopspilka (COOP Ukraine), since January 2018. During this time, about four thousand people aged 55+ have been trained at the university. The oldest students of the university are 80-90 years old.
